Hi everyone it’s time for another review!
I am going to talk about something I have used in the past, Green Lipped Mussel Supplement. I will give you the information and my verdict and let you make your choice.
What’s The Story?
We have all done the Google searches after being diagnosed with arthritis, what can help my arthritis pain? There is always a lot of suggestions and some occur quite often.
I will be talking about a common one in the next instalment of the A-Z Arthritis Toolkit so keep an eye out for that. For now as you have guessed from the title Green Lipped Mussel Supplement is one that pops up a lot.
Like most supplements it is available in cream and tablet form and yes I have tried both.
It was discovered in New Zealand and whilst trialing it to see if it would have a positive effect against cancer, which it didn’t, it was observed that people who had joint problems noted decreased pain and improved function whilst taking it.
It is believed that it helps because it is full of omega 3 fatty acids and minerals which help support and maintain joint health.
Did It Work?
Yes and no. I know that maybe isn’t the answer you wanted to hear but it is my experience of it. Taken in tablet form I didn’t notice any real benefit from it.
Nor did I experience any decline when I stopped taking it, usually a sign that you are not receiving much benefit from it.
I did also use the cream for some time, I did find some pain relief with the cream and also found it useful in reducing swelling. However, the pain relief didn’t last long at all really and so I eventually stopped using it.
It is fairly inexpensive you can get a 125ml tube for around £5, though it is quite a thin consistency so although you are told not to apply too much at once it still does not last long.
The cream did provide me with pain relief, though it certainly didn’t last for a great length of time, lucky if I got 30 minutes relief.
It has very little known side effects apart from the obvious, which is that it is from shellfish so anyone who has an allergy should find another product.
Not long-lasting pain relief and needs to be bought frequently so although it appears cheap the cost can soon mount up.
Would I Recommend?
No, is the short answer.
As I have noted there isn’t pain relief for a long enough amount of time to warrant continual use of this. Yes I did use it continually but that was before I used various other creams to compare.
It is quite a thin liquid so it absorbs quickly into the skin which can be looked upon as good and bad. It may be good as it is soaking into the joint instantly so the relief can happen immediately.
It can be a bad thing as I have spoken before about using these creams while you are massaging the joint, so a cream that soaks in instantly doesn’t keep the skin lubricated for long.
After reading some reviews I am of the opinion that this can help people with mild arthritis and general achy joints but not strong enough for moderate to severe arthritis.
Many of you that have read my posts will know that my cream of choice is Boswellia Serrata Cream which you can read about on the product reviews here.
The Boswellia Cream is thicker so it remains workable on the surface of the skin for longer. It provides much longer pain relief and I believe is better value for money.
Boswellia also gives much longer pain relief than the Green Lipped Mussel cream and in my opinion is the better cream here.
I will leave you to make your own minds up, as usual any comments are more than welcome, have you used Green Lipped Mussel cream?
