Arthritis and the spine

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well.

Today we are going to take a look at arthritis and the spine, not to be confused with arthritis of the spine. We are going to see if there is any connection between the two and if there is any link that may help with our pain.

There are usually two different types of people who have arthritis.

Ones that listen to their doctors and take the medication they suggest and others who will do their own work and look for different methods that can help them.

I fall into the latter category as many of you will know. I can’t remember the last time I saw my doctor and for what good I have found them I don’t care if I never have to see them again!

I am approaching a year and a half without any pharmaceutical medication, I haven’t really been in any pain, not like I used to be anyway. I haven’t needed any products that the doctors push on people to achieve this either.

The reason I have been able to achieve progression against a degenerative disease is because I put my own work in, I read, researched, experimented and then repeated the process again and again.

Whilst I am not attempting to ostrasize anyone who has kept relying on their doctor I feel I should point out that this article will contain things classed as alternative medicine.

If you do not wish to read about such things then feel free to stop reading and I wish you all the best on your journey.

If you are open to new ideas and are looking for a way out from the side-effects and potentially addictive nature of the scientific medicine you are taking then read on my friend.

Chiropractic treatment

It wasn’t until I looked more into this subject that I realised the huge debate that rages over it with very loud voracious voices on both sides.

Chiropractors are hands-on therapists that use manipulations of the body’s joints and muscles in an effort to keep the body’s structure aligned and help relieve any pain.

I first decided to visit a chiropractor in January 2018, I had been struggling with my ankle and I was worried that the way I was walking or limping, would be affecting adjacent joints.

I would go every couple of months and she would see which side I was out of line and work to get me re-aligned. I felt benefit from it every time I went.

It did come with a price and that was just under £40 a visit, I decided it was worth it as I was getting relief from it.

In a previous article I mentioned that I had gone back to the gym again for the first time since my accident, I was feeling strong enough to go and wanted to capitalise on the progress I was seeing.

The gym I joined is owned by a husband and wife and it justs so happens that the woman is a chiropractor and because I am a member it only costs me £27 per visit for an adjustment.

So I switched.

This has turned out to be a fantastic decision as this chiropractors approach is different from the last.

Before I was paying nearly £40 for her to focus on my spine and get me back aligned. This lady has worked more on manipulating my ankle and trying to relieve some of the stiffness.

She has an unbelievable knowledge of the inner workings of the body, joints, muscle, connective tissues, nerves. She has also provided me with excellent tips to use at home.

I was told by her to purchase a foam roller which I spoke about in a previous article. The roller can help relieve tight and stiff muscles and make you more flexible.

Chiropractic treatment can help various parts of the body because it taps into the central nervous system it can reset the body’s mechanics to get it back to running how it should.

You may hear horror stories about chiropractors, maybe you have heard about people having discs slip and things like that. I would say these instances are rare and loudly shouted by those opposed to ‘alternative’ medicine.

In the room of my chiropractor sitting on the wall is this quote;

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Thomas Edison 1903

It is the first thing you see as you open the door to enter the room.

For those of you who only believe in science and dismiss everything else as a placebo, this was said over 100 years ago by someone who was considered Americas greatest inventor.

Over a HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

And the approach we have to disease is still flawed, the amount of medicine we have given in that time has only increased.

Why chiropractic?

I realise many of you will be thinking for somebody who has ankle arthritis why even consider going for chiropractic treatment.

We have discussed above the fact that I wanted to make sure my walking gait wasn’t making me too unbalanced. Arthritis can be bad enough in one joint I certainly didn’t want it in multiple adjacent joints.

Another reason I went is because after doing my research I realised that there is a link between every body part and the spine.

Therefore there is a link between arthritis and the spine.

Nerves coming from all body parts must enter and exit the spinal cord. The spinal cord houses our nerve roots and they extend to smaller nerves called peripheral nerves, these nerves control all body parts.

So you see the manipulations received in the back and in my ankle are made to correct destructive changes that are happening in my body.

It often isn’t the most comfortable of experiences but I will take some minor discomfort for the greater good.

At my last session there was some cracking and popping a sound that I think chiropractors love, this is maybe the dark side of a chiropractor they love that cracking sound.

It isn’t painful it is just a release in that part of your anatomy, a much needed release. In 30 minutes I was in there my ankle was freed slightly and showed signs of a little more movement.

I hope that by continuing to have these sessions alongside the things I am already doing that have kept me pain free, it may be the key to regaining some of that movement and another step in the right direction.

Remember the mindset

The reality is that on this website I can only give you my opinion on what I believe can help. The point is if you truly want to overcome pain, stiffness, arthritis then you have to put the work in.

You have to go out there and try different remedies, you have to begin to understand that true health can only be achieved by evaluating all areas of your life.

The quote above by Thomas Edison includes diet because everybody knows if you don’t fuel your body correctly your body will stall and breakdown.

Consider what you are putting in your body and what effect it will have, if it’s smoking think about your lungs, alcohol think about your liver, food think about your gut and intestines, prescription medication think about your mental health and gut.

In England doctors are referred to as GP’s which stands for general practitioner, meaning exactly that, they are general. They have a general idea about what your disease is and what can subdue the pain of it.

That is fair enough because they have a lot of ailments to cover, but you don’t!

You can become the expert of your condition, you have the advantage of knowing how your pain feels what makes it worse, what makes it better and what you can push yourself to.

Or you can sit and say this isn’t my fault, I didn’t ask for this and keep taking the pills from your doctor based on their genral knowledge whilst they destroy your gut lining amongst other side effects.

And I see and hear these people all the time they will say that their doctor is trying to find the right concoction of drugs to get their pain under control.

It makes me sad when I hear this and I imagine the damage they are doing to their gut and their minds.

But only you can take back control, stop letting it dominate you and take steps to fight back and you will become the dominant one.

This is what my journey has been so far and it has gotten me to the point where I haven’t needed a pharmaceutical drug in a year and a half.

I have made small incremental changes that have now built into a monumental life change. Chiropractic care is another incremental change that I have made with the ultimate goal firmly fixed in my mind…

beating this crappy disease into submission!

  1. Hi Andy, this is a very informative article. My mother inlaw is suffering from knee Arthritis and the Dr said she should not go for a knee replacement yet. Can a Chiropractic treatment help her? She is suffering from pain and needs improvement or relief.

      Yes I would say if she can find a good one near her they will be able to relieve some of the pain. It’s certainly worth a try isn’t it while she’s waiting for her operation.

  2. Hi Andy! What a very nice article. You’ve said it all regarding chiropractic treatments. Surely, there are cracking but not painful sounds. I just love listening to them that’s why I enjoy every session I have. Keep up and all the best!

    1. Hi Wil, no they are not painful sounds though it can be a little disconcerting hearing my ankle cracking based on the fact it all started with a broken leg and ankle.

  3. Great post Andy, I have athritis of the knees and I, like you don’t like taking all the painkillers offered by the doctor. As you say it is us that has the ailment and we know what we can and can’t do to avoid pain.
    I found that if I went to the gym this aggravated the knees big time. So I gave it up and took up walking instead and I have not had a flare up since September when I quit the gym.
